Caring for your pet
Pet care basics
Being a responsible pet owner is understanding what your pet needs and also being aware of what your responsibilities are to the community.
Know your pet
Learn about your pet's special needs - dietary, health, housing and general care.
Balanced diet
Provide your pet with an adequate balanced diet and ensure it has access to clean, cool drinking water at all times. The RSPCA feeds and recommends Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Animals awaiting adoption are fed Hill’s Science Diet, which is a healthy, balanced diet to ensure optimal health and wellbeing.
Regular exercise
Ensure you honour your pet’s requirements for regular exercise and mental stimulation.
Clean, safe and appropriate living environment
Help prevent illness and disease while providing the comfort your new pet deserves.
Regular health check ups vaccinations
Ensure your pet visits the vet regularly to avoid illness and encourage general wellbeing.
Love and attention
Ensure your pet has the appropriate companionship and is not neglected. Provide your pet with love and attention, and commit to providing care for its entire life.
Ensure you pet is microchipped and the details are up to date
Ensure your pet is reunited with you if it is lost. Keep your pet’s microchip details up to date. Contact your local RSPCA for more information. Also, ensure your pet is registered with your local Council.
Socialise
Get your pet is involved in activities with other pets, family and friends.
Respect others
Respect the rights of non-pet owners by keeping your pet under control while in public and by disposing of any droppings made in public areas.
